Once called "the greatest meeting of land and water in the world", Point Lobos is a rocky tree-covered headland, considered by many to the crown jewel of the California State Park System. The reserve protects unique groves of Monterery pines and Monterey cypresses. Their wind-twisted beauty can only exist in such an environment of salt-sprayed, foggy coolness, which results from the meeting of the cold waters of the Monterey Canyon with the warm winds of summer. Ansel Adams and Edward Weston used to roam freely the place, sometimes with nude models, to create some of their masterpieces, but nowadays, heavy visitation has caused the access is very regulated to protect its beauty.
