Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, where half of the state residents live. Anchorage is the only place in Alaska with all modern fixtures of American life such as a modern performing arts center, shopping malls, dozens of fast food restaurants, traffic lights, traffic jams, and urban sprawl. Yet, moose can often be seen in Anchorage's urban parks, and the city is home of the world largest floatplane base. Most of visitors to Alaska will pass through Anchorage, since is a major transportation hub. This is also a great place to get information (at the Log Cabin visitor center and even more so the Alaska Public Lands Information Center) and gear (one of the best REI and AMH) for your trip.
