The Puna district of the island of Hawaii, wich occupies its South-East corner, is characterized by recent volcanism. At the west end of Kalapana, houses are built next to lava flows only a couple of year old. Lava Tree State park preserves nice specimen of free-standing lava tubes, formed when fast flowing lava encounters wet ohia trees. The only boat ramp on this coast is found at Isacc Hale Beach Park, a popular, although tricky, surfing spot. The main town in Puna, Pahoa has the reputation of being an outlaw town.
