Palo Alto is a city on the San Francisco Peninsula, known for its proximity to Stanford University. Possibly the most lively and upscale of the mid-peninsula cities, it has a large historic downtown area. Not to be missed there is the Stanford Theatre in art deco style, that specializes in classic movies of the Hollywood golden age. Palo Alto stretches from the Baylands marshes (a great bird watching area) next to the Bay up to wild hills carpeted with wildflowers in the spring.
