Muir Woods National Monument preserves one of the last remaining old growth redwood forests in the San Francisco Bay Area. The proximity of Muir Woods to San Francisco makes it a major tourist attraction, the most accessible and visited of all redwood forests. Established by Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, Muir Woods was the first National Monument created from land donated by a private individual, US Congressman William Kent, who insisted that the new monument be named after John Muir rather than himself.
