"The Queen of the Missions", mission Santa Barbara was founded in 1786, and the city built up near the mission, one of the largest in the California chain. A distinctive feature are its red tile roofs. It is an upscale city (fourth highest US average home sale price in 2006), popular with tourists because of its Mediterranean climate.
