| Mount Hamilton is one of the tallest mountains overlooking the Silicon Valley at 4,213 feet above sea level (and above San Jose). Lick Observatory sits atop the mountain, for which its 19-mile access road was constructed. Lick Observatory was the world's first mountain-top observatory, and its 36 inch (91.44-cm) refracting telescope was Earth's largest when built in 1888. On the slopes of the Mount Hamilton Range lie Joseph Grant County park, which features an extensive network of very steep trails. Below that farmlands and pastures extend down right to the suburbs of San Jose. |
