Southwest and West Maui are some of the more developed and driest portions of the island, but as you continue clockwise to Northwest Maui the character of the coast changes dramatically to a lush, rugged, and wild shoreline. While the highway through the south-west of Maui is the busiest on the island, in Northwest Maui it deteriorates quickly to a road with many steep and winding one-lane sections.
