Located in the heart of the Mojave Desert, this new park, covering 1.6 million acres between Interstate 15 and Interstate 40, was established in 1994 through the California Desert Protection Act. It is still relatively undeveloped, affording opportunities for solitude not easily found at other southern California parks. Its terrain comprise the rose-colored Kelso sand dunes, California's second highest, numerous volcanic cinder cones, dense Joshua tree forests that surpass those of Joshua Tree national Park, jumble rocks, delicatedly decorated caverns, and mile-high mountains.
