High Road to TaosPictures by QT Luong |

The High Road to Taos is a scenic byway that snakes in the mountains between Espanola and Taos, bypassing the more direct valley road. The High Road to Taos passes through a number of intersting small towns and sites. Picuris Pueblo is a small pueblo still inhabited by the Picuris tribe with a superb adobe church that has recently been hand-restored to give it back its original appearance. The small town of Las Trampas is home to the San Jose de Gracia Church, one of the most beautiful colonial-era churches in the country. The Sanctuario de Chimayo consists of a small adobe church whose size belies its importance. The site is the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in the United States, with more than 300,000 visits per year. Many visitors take away some dirt that is believed to have healing powers. The church replaces it from nearby hills for a total of 30 tons per year. |
