Kootenay National Park streches for 96 kilometers along the Banff-Windermere highway, also known as the Kootenay Parkway. Kootenay sees little visitation compared with the other national parks of the Canadian rockies, yet Kootenay offers one of the most scenic drives in the area, second only to the famous Icefields Parkway, as well as a great diversity of natural features.

Kootenay National Park, together with neighbor parks (Banff, Jasper, Yoho) form a huge protected area of the Canadian Rockies that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
