East of the Canadian Rockies begins the great North America plain, previously covered by prairie and roamed by millions of buffalo, but now developped as an agricultural heartland.

About two hours east of Calgary, the gently rolling prairie grasslands suddenly drop off, plunging the visitor into a whole other world of hoodoos, pinnacles, coulees and buttes. In Dinosaur Provincial Park, amongst the beautiful scenery of Canada's only large badlands area, lie some of the most important fossil discoveries ever made, in particular about 35 species of dinosaur, dating back some 75 million years. Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, near Fort Macleod, bear witness to a prehistoric custom practiced by native people of the North American plains for nearly 6000 years. They killed bison by chasing them over a long, but surprisingly short cliff. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
