The Florida Keys are a string of barrier islands south of the tip of the Florida mainland. They are connected by US Highway 1, whose section over the Keys is aptly named the Overseas Highway, as it travels 100 miles to Key West over more than forty bridges, the longest of them being the 7-mile bridge, suspended between open turquoise ocean and sky. The Florida Keys have a subtropical vegetation consisting mostly of mangroves. Big Pine Key is home to the endengered Key Deer, the smallest species of deer in north America, just the size of a large dog. Although it is possible to find accomodation on each of the keys, by far the largest and most developed town on the Florida Keys is on Key West.
