The northern part of Queensland, from Cairns, the main town in the area, to the Cape tribulation, is a beautiful stretch of coast, where the tropical rainforest meets the ocean. The roads beyond the Daintree river, which is crossed by a ferry, are still only partly paved, and the beaches often deserted. The rainforests offers a particularly extensive and varied array of plants, as well as marsupials and singing birds, along with other rare and endangered animals and plant species.
