From the Neapolis founded by Greek settlers in 470 B.C. to the city of today, Naples has retained the imprint of the successive cultures that emerged in Europe and the Mediterranean basin. This makes it a unique site, with a wealth of outstanding monuments. The compact center of Naples is filled with palaces, churches, convents, and monestaries. It is a lively and often chaotic place, where the narrow and dark side streets provide a glimpse into the life of its citizens, while the high concentration of 15th century churches provide a glimpse into its past. The numerous street-side eateries serve for only a few euros what is arguably the most authentic and best pizza in Italy, characterized by a very thin crust and a rich, flavorful tomato sauce. The historic center of Naples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
