The city of Berkeley is the site of the flagship campus of the University of California. The public campus, founded in 1868, is one of the most prestigious research universities in the world. Both city and university have long been famed as a center of activist politics and radical social ideas. The Free Speech Movement began on the Berkeley campus, and many student demonstrations against the Vietnam War occurred there in the 1960. Hippie culture flourished there, and its influence can still be seen on Telegraph Avenue, the city's most lively street. One area of Berkeley, known as the Gourmet Ghetto, also recently became reknown as a place to have good food.
