Quebec, the largest of Canada's provinces, is quite different from other areas of North America because of its majority French-speaking population. Although its atmosphere is visible in largely bilingual Montreal, the heart of French Canada is Quebec City. Quebec City, founded in the early 17th century, has preserved its 400 years of history well, and more than any other city in North America, feels like an old European city. Besides its narrow, winding streets and stone buildings, it is the only city in North America to have preserved its colonial fortifications. The historic district of Quebec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
