Black Rock Desert is the largest dry lake bed in North America, extending for 100 miles, with an area of 1,000 square miles. The near-perfect flatness of the surface made it the site of recent world land speed records, including a run of the first and only supersonic car. Black Rock Desert is also famous as the site of the annual Burning Man festival, a radical experiment in community, self-expression, and self-reliance, during which a temporary city of tens of thousands is established for a week on the Black Rock desert playa around a wooden effigy that is ritually burned at the end of the festival. Black Rock Desert is 90 North of Reno. Nearby is Pyramid Lake, an unexpected blue desert lake in an Indian reservation.
