Richmond today's main industries are refineries, but during World War 2, Richmond grew from 24,000 people to 100,000 people, as it was home to 56 different war industries. In particular Richmond shipyards produced 747 ships, more than any other in the world. The Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond commemorates the "Rosies", women who made up much of the workforce at the shipyards.
