Huangshan, sometimes called 'the loveliest mountain of China' is the most famous of the Chinese mountains, and has been an inspiration for Chinese art and literature since the Tang Dynasty around the 8th century, culminating with the Shanshui school of landscape painting that provided an iconic representation of the oriental landscape. Today, its scenery of granite peaks and ancient pine trees often emerging out of mist or a sea of clouds are an extremely popular attraction, made accessible by cable-cars, paved trails, and summit hotels. Mount Huangshan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
