Shiprock (native name: Tse Bitai, or "winged rock") is a volcanic rock formation rising abruptly 1,800 feet (550 m) above the desert plain. Located near the town of Shiprock, which is named for the peak, Shiprock plays a significant role in Navajo mythology and tradition. Shiprock is the most prominent landmark in northwestern New Mexico.
