Belgium (Belgique, Belgie) is a modest country that offers more than expected from its small size and flat geography. It has three languages, (mostly French and Flemish, with a bit of German), a captivating historical and artistic heritage, and some food specialties that are reknown world-wide. Brussells (Bruxelles) and Bruges were two of medieval Europe's greatest cities, and they offer some remarkably well-preserved historical districts. The good things to taste there include superlative chocolate and beer, and, more commonly, perfectly well done fries and waffles. In June 2004, I spent a couple of days in Belgium, traveling by train from France through three cities. |
