| San Diego, founded as a military post in 1602, is the second most populous city in California, after Los Angeles. Located in the southwestern corner of the state of California, and thus in the southwestern corner of the continental United States, San Diego is appreciated for its year round temperate climate, excellent beaches, and the country's largest urban park, Balboa Park. Beneath the modern skyline lies historic buildings in the Gaslamp quarter, as well as Old Town. Thanks to one of the world's great natural harbors, San Diego is home to the US naval fleet.
