Northest California marks the southern limit of the Cascade Range, a chain of mountains that runs up to British Columbia. The Cascades are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the ring of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean. The range is still volcanically active: Lassen Peak erupted in 1911. Further north is Mount Shasta 14,179 ft (4,322 m), the second highest point in California, a dormant volcano that rises abruply 10,000 ft (3,000 m) above the surrounding area and can be seen more than 60 miles away. Mount Shasta is the centerpiece of several faiths and cults. Lava Beds National Monument, besides its great variety of volcanic formations, is the site of the largest concentration of lava tube caves in the United States.
