Just one bridge away, San Francisco residents can enjoy open hills and a stretch of wild coastline in the The Marin headlands. The area is nowadays protected by the Golden Gate National Recreation area, but it used to be of strategic importance, as can be seen by the numerous remnants of military installations. For a few years, even after the National Recreation Area was established, the nuclear-armed Nike missile site, situated within the Marin Headlands, was still operational.
