| La Jolla is an upscale community (highest US average home sale price in 2006) settled atop cliffs that drop to sandy secluded coves and clear blue waters. The Salk Institute was founded in 1960 by Jonas Salk (who developped the first polio vaccine), as an independent biological and medical research center. The stark building, designed by Louis Kahn, as "architecture of silence and light" is considered to be a masterpiece of modern architecture. |
