Napa Valley is one of the premier viticultural areas in the world, home to more than 450 wineries, visited by more than 4.5 million each year. Napa Valley's combination of Mediterranean climate, geography, and geology are conducive to growing quality wine grapes. Although Napa Valley's first commercial vineyard was established in 1858, it was only in the 1960s that Napa Valley became a top wine region, with the founding of the Robert Mondavi operation. At the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, two Napa Valley wines bested several famous French labels in blind tasting, cementing Napa Valley's reputation as a producer of world class wines.
