The Shan state is a mountainous area where high-elevation crops of lentils and mountain rice make colorful patterns on the rolling hills. Like other high areas of South East Asia, Shan State is inhabited by diverse hill tribes which have maintained their traditions and attire. The most famous of them is the Padaung, whose women wear heavy brass rings around the neck, appearing to lengthen it.
