Taos is a small city noted for its mountain setting near the Sangre de Cristo Range, artistic community, and architectural heritage. Remarkable buildings include the San Francisco de Asis Church, a frequent subject of Georgia O Keefe and Ansel Adams, and the Taos Pueblo. The Pueblo de Taos is a traditional community dwelling of Native Americans made of adobe settlements. They form possibly the oldest continuously inhabited structures in America, 1000 year old. The Taos Pueblo main buildings are the largest multistoried pueblo structures still standing. Pueblo adobe walls can reach a thickness of several feet. Pueblo homes are separated, with access only through ladders, no electricity, running water, or plumbing. Representing the culture of the Pueblo Indians, the Pueblo de Taos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
