Saugus and Lowell are two places where one can observe the history of early industrialization in America. The Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site, in operation from 1646 to 1668, was the first integrated iron works in North America. The city of Lowell was founded in the 1820s as a planned manufacturing center for textiles. By the 1850s it became the largest industrial complex in the United States. 88 operating looms remain in the Boott Cotton Mills Museum.
