Montgomery is the capital of Alabama, notable for its Civil War and Civil Rights Movement history. Montgomery was the first capital of the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis took the oath of office as president of the Confederacy on the steps of the Capitol in 1862. From that spot, one can gaze on the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church where Martin Luther King, Jr. began his career as a minister. Montgomery became a primary site of the Civil Rights Movement, after Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955 for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. A boycott of the city bus system eventually resulted in the one of the first victories of the US civil rights movement, after the Supreme Court ruled that Alabama racial segragation laws for buses were unconstitutional.
